Supporting Your Child’s Trip

We believe that the Canberra school trip experience is one of the most wonderful gifts that you could give to your child. While preparation for the first-time traveller may be somewhat overwhelming, please know that in the end, it is definitely worth it.

We’ve compiled some tips below that we hope will help eliminate some of the uncertainties. We would love to hear from you if you have any tips that have helped your child so we can add to this list and help others!

Before your child’s Canberra trip, we strongly encourage an open discussion with the school should your child have special circumstances which might impact the success and happiness of your child while on tour.

Medications

You should receive a letter from your school in relation to medical information and medication requests, before your child travels.

These are important to keep your child safe whist away from your care. Schools often request that all required medications be clearly labelled and given to the school staff before departing.

It is important to acknowledge and inform the school staff going on the trip of any ongoing or significant medical condition which may impact upon your child’s time away. With understanding all conditions of children in their care the staff can plan the appropriate measures to care for them.

If your child suffers from ear pain on flights, pack some lollies to chew on. If your child has a fear of flying, discuss this in advance with your child’s teacher and/or doctor.

Travel Sickness

If you your child is at risk of feeling travel sickness, please ensure that your child does not have a milk breakfast. It is also a good idea to take a relevant Travel Sickness tablet before their departure. For your child’s comfort, it would be advisable to include additional tablets for during the excursion and for the trip home. Before their departure it would be courteous to inform the school that your child has suffered from travel sickness so they are aware to understand why your child may be feeling unwell.

Staying Away from Home

In many cases the Canberra School Trip may be the first time your child has slept away from home, or familiar surroundings. This thought may be daunting and cause anxiety for some children. If your child has any specific needs associated with travel and staying away from home, please inform your school so that they can do their best to address your child’s needs or put plans into place to best support your child. Potentially arranging some sleepovers at cousins, family members of close friends house between now and your departure may help ease the worry of sleeping in less familiar places.

Staying Safe and Respect

The Canberra School Trip will be a fun, educational and build life long memories. However, safety of the children and teachers on these trips is even more important. There are a few ways that your child can help in keeping everyone safe. We require all travellers to act safely and wear seatbelts at all times during travel. The students are to stay with their group and supervising teachers. It is also crucial that the children respect their teachers and guides by following instructions and listening attentively.
